Leyla Spencer was educated in New Jersey, New York, California,
New Mexico, Paris, and Seville. As a child in Seville, she was deeply attracted to the Moorish style of tile work so prevalent
in southern Spain. This blended with her Turkish ancestry to create a fascination with how color and pattern are used within
the limitations of tile. Leyla has shown her work, in many different media, throughout New Jersey. Her abstract pastels are
in the Johnson and Johnson corporate collection, as well as many private collections. She came to mosaic after a long career
in other media.
"Working in tile requires patience that I did not possess as a younger artist. Now I find it very
relaxing. It is a medium that cannot be rushed. The tiles need to be cut and placed individually. There is no way to rush
the process."
